I have read this set half a dozen times -- for a while there I re-read them every summer. Foote was a novelist before he was a historian, and it shows in his style. The books give a fairly even-handed treatment of the military history of the American civil war, using actual quotes to flesh out the interactions among the characters to a surprising extent. One of the best histories I've ever read.

Date read is approximate. The author is a very skilled writer of fiction born in Mississippi in 1916. If youve seen Ken Burns Civil War documentary youve seen him speak at a number of points in the production. This is not fiction. Its the result of twenty years if scholarship by a man sympathetic to both sides to some degree. It took me a couple years to finish the three books. It is a sad and beautiful story, true history written with great literary skill.

What a superb piece of writing!The very best historical works, for me, have always been those which have a strong narrative voice. I think the origins of this taste lie in my early reading of Herodotus' epic recounting of the Persian Wars. Despite its very positive rating, I was rather disappointed with Foote's voluminous narrative. While I confess, that military history is not a particular interest of mine, I felt that Foote suffered in comparison to other histories of the Civil War I've read. Foote's coverage of virtually every military encounter, without providing a sense of importance or size, gives a misleading sense that the war went very well for the Confederates until the very end when, mostly, Sherman, and Grant
