Explanation In Pursuance Of Books Secrets of the Wolves (Wolf Chronicles #2)
My rating: 3.5I came across Dorothy Hearst's Secrets of the Wolves without having read the previous book in the trilogy, and found a lot to like in this engaging tale that fictionalizes that elusive period in prehistory where the domestication of dogs began.
Hearst tells this story from a wolf's point of view, which is just wonderful. She postulates an active effort on the part of wolves to become 'friends' of humans, while weaving a larger web of conflicting interests, both human and wolfish, around this central struggle.
The action centers on the adventures of Kaala, believed by some to be sent by the gods to lead the wolves in their effort to befriend humans. As a female wolf, Kaala brings a fresh flavor to the tried-and-true theme of a somewhat reluctant but evidently capable Chosen One. Her story is told in a more-or-less parallel fashion to that of her closest human friend, TaLi, a young krianan who like her grandmother has the gift of understanding the animals.
Hearst does an excellent job of capturing the mannerisms of real wolves in this novel. There were countless moments where the narrative inspired vivid images of wolf behavior and interactions. The hunting scenes were very exciting, and I would have liked to have seen more of them. I would have also liked more vivid attention given to the smells and sounds of the wolf world. But all in all, while reading the novel one has the sensation of running with the wolves, and this in itself makes it a worthwhile read.
Secrets of the Wolves was heading straight for a four star review right up until the last few chapters. I dropped it down to three stars for a really very personal reason: I'm not fond of trilogies where each installment is set up to leave you hanging at the end. I like to see novels be able to stand on their own in terms of resolution, even if they are part of a larger story. Secrets, while a great read, doesn't really reach a denoument. It simply cuts off in the middle of the action at page 371, leaving the reader waiting for book three.

Yet another treat...Wow! This series of books has been an awesome surprise find so far. There are twists and turns in every chapter, and it just keeps getting richer and fuller as the world Hearst has created gets more fleshed out. I almost don't want to start the final book in the trilogy, as I know it will take me from that world soon! After preventing the fight between human and wolf, Kaala is now given a year time to live in peace with the humans of the Wide Valley. But keeping this peace proves much harder than previously thought. One of my favourite books! With plenty of unexpected twists, Hearst manages to keep the reader captivated. Especially with that cliffhanger ending, having to wait for the final book to come out (which I had to as I read the book when it came out first) is a pain. Our characters are still very good.

In Secrets of the Wolves, Kaala and her pack mates have to find a way to live in harmony with the humans in the valley. Her worthiness to her pack as well as the lives of both the wolves and the humans are at stake. However, not everyone sees it that way and she encounters many obstacles and distractions on her journey. "Told from the wolf's point-of-view and set 14,000 years ago in a time when the cultures of wolves and humans were not so different", the book takes the reader on a unique
A masterpiece it is!
Wow.I forced myself to read the rest of this book today...and for such a disappointing, infuriating ending. I want to kill all those stupid humans. Right now.I'm gonna have to get my thoughts and anger together before I can review it. Just.....wow.
I won this on Goodreads. This is the second book in The Wolf Chronicles, and it is told from Kaala's perspective, who happens to be a wolf. An attempt to bring wolves and humans together, living in harmony, has not worked out in the past, but Kaala finds herself in the position to try, along with the help of a select few wolves as well as Tlitoo, a raven who is more than he seems. But there is a problem. A Greatwolf named Milsindra is out to destroy any hope Kaala has of succeeding as well as
