This comment from a reviewer speaks to my feelings for this slim volume:"Mark Twain first wrote the Extracts from Adam's Diary in 1904, and then Eve's Diary on 1905. Both pieces were brought together in book format in 1906. It seems that Adam was based on Twain himself, and Eve on his wife, Livy, who died in June 1904, right before he wrote the Diaries. They are seen as a posthumous love-letter to Livy, so you can tell the work is very personal, and has nothing to do with Twains religious

Saturday nightBegan reading.Wednesday Built me a shelter against the rain, but could not have it to myself in peace. The new creature intruded. When I tried to put it out it shed water out of the holes it looks with, and wiped it away with the back of its paws, and made a noise such as some of the other animals make when they are in distress. I wish it would not talk; it is always talking. That sounds like a cheap fling at the poor creature, a slur; but I do not mean it so. I have never heard



A light humorous account of the first meeting of a man and a woman in the garden of Eden which had me smiling half way though and laughing outloud at some moments. Did you think they were bored just because they were the only two people on Earth? You coudn't be wrong. Twain nails the common, misunderstandings men and women have about each other. This is a love story, have no doubt about that, the first love story of all and also one of discovering, adapting to, and appreciating, which are
