This is a great book - Interesting, complex, richly developed characters with great intertwining story lines. Each of the three main characters were strong people facing problems from their past that were affecting their futures. The historical basis was wonderful and I would love to visit Belmont Mansion now as well as read a biography on Adelicia Acklen.

I loved loved this book! The history is so rich. Really neat to learn about that era in Nashville. I wanted to be friends with the mansions staff and I just loved the relationship between the two main characters.

While this book was alright overall, I was put off by a couple of things. The first was Sutton believing that his family's slaves owed them something after the war was over, and they were free. No matter what lies people tell themselves about slavery, there is no such thing as a kind slave owner. Freedom is kind. Paying people for their work is kind. Keeping families together is kind.
